Gear control unit faults are often blamed on the transmission itself. Yet most symptoms point to an air leak or bellows fatigue on the control side.
Symptoms
Stiffness during gear shifts usually shows that the seal assembly inside the cylinder has begun to leak.
Delayed response in neutral points to a pressure drop in the air supply; check the line first, then the unit.
A hissing leak heard from the bellows is direct proof that the outer bellows has torn, and it causes rapid damage due to dirt ingress.
The gear slipping into neutral on its own should not be confused with mechanical linkage play.
Complaints that appear in the cold and disappear once warm are related to oil type and seal hardness.
